The U. S. Government’s statistics on poverty in America indicate that 1 in 7 families in the U. S. live in poverty. Locally, the personal economic reality of poverty has challenged the spiritual and physical health of many of our citizens. Correspondingly, our greatest challenge has been to revisit and erase our previous definition and picture of the face of hunger.
As a church, endeavoring to comprehend the Lord’s will of how to respond to his love in a way that is socially responsible to the people we are called to serve, we found comfort and guidance in Scripture. “And the King shall answer and say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” (Matthew 25:40)
Moreover, we were mindful that many of the miracles performed by Jesus for suffering humanity occurred in the breaking of bread and table fellowship. The Feed the Hungry Program Free Spaghetti Wednesday Initiative is a collective response by the Mission and Brotherhood Departments of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church to God’s love in a way that we feel underscores our sensitivity to the plight of the people we serve that is meaningful and socially responsible.
